Understanding the Social Implications of Gene Edited Foods

This past semester, I have worked closely with Dr. Carmen Bain who is a professor at Iowa State University in the Sociology Department. I had the pleasure of continuing to work with Dr. Bain on her gene edited foods project. The overall goal of the project is to analyze the perceived inducements and impediments of public trust in gene edited foods.

My role this semester provided critical input that assisted the team members analyze their data, present their results in papers and presentations and enhanced outreach. Some of the tasks I worked on this semester consisted of transcribing interviews and participant observations, designing content for the gene edited foods project website, and researching nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) online platforms. For the project website I gathered content, learned how to do some coding in WordPress, and worked with ISU faculty to format the site within ISU’s guidelines. For researching NGO online platforms, I categorized the information into whether they published content and if that content was specific to GMOs and/or gene editing. Among the ones that did have positions on GMOs and/or gene editing I split this up on whether they published positions surrounding regulation and/or labeling. Overall, these tasks filled up my time throughout the semester and I was able to learn a lot along the way.
