Science with Practice Communications Internship at Iowa Pork Industry Center

Mikayla Schaefer

The Iowa Pork Industry Center Communications intern works alongside Communications Specialist, Sherry Hoyer. The internship focuses on outreach and education led by IPIC, assisting with the IPIC newsletter, writing a news release and assisting with other IPIC materials. The main purpose of my SWP project is to focus on preparation of PorkBridge and SowBridge. PorkBridge and SowBridge further educate pork producers on various management practices on efficiency and producing high quality pork. Through preparation,I update the excel sheet of participants, review CD content, update letters for each session, prep CD for mailing and mail the CDs. Making sure that each person who paid for either PorkBridge or SowBridge is of high importance because IPIC wants them to have an easy experience so they are able to focus on the content in the program.

Another item I am able to do for my project is to write News Now summaries for the IPIC newsletter. The newsletter shares short summaries of articles, events and production tips with subscribers. Writing a news release is another project for my SWP. My news release was about the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. After interviewing multiple people, I was able finish the release and once revised I hope to publish the article. My SWP with IPIC has truly improved my communication skills through the multiple projects I have been assigned over the semester.
