For my semester project, I was a teaching assistant for a class called Sociology 350: Women in Agriculture and the Food System. This class was taught by Dr. Carmen Bain. Throughout the semester, my responsibilities as the teaching assistant included: grading all assignments, handling all emails, establishing and maintaining the class Canvas website, and preparing daily tasks such as attendance sheets, paperwork, and some Powerpoints. For Science with Practice, I analyzed and recorded my class’s progress throughout the semester. I paid attention to criteria such as grades (did students improve in response to feedback?), responsiveness and communication (did students reach out more as the semester progressed, either through email or in person?), and instructor communication (did my instructor contact me less as the semester progressed, suggesting a higher level of independence and competence)? I saw improvement in all three of these areas by the end of the semester: student communication went up, grades went up, and my instructor level of supervision and contact went down.
