Estimating Northern Bobwhite Density Using Point Counts and ARUs

Elke Windschitl

Northern bobwhite restoration is monitored annually under the Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative Coordinated Implementation Program. Here, bobwhite densities were calculated from point count surveys. Densities were then compared to various metrics obtained from Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) to determine the efficacy of using ARUs to estimate density. Raven Pro sound analysis software was used extensively in retrieving data from the ARUs. Using ARUs to estimate density rather than point count surveys could conserve Iowa DNR resources in monitoring this game bird species.
